Planting Seeds,Growing Leaders: Impact of Mini Hands 4 Light Work

In October 2024, we launched something special at Pleasants Lane Elementary School — the “Mini Hands 4 Light Workpilot — and it was nothing short of amazing! For four weeks, young minds got their hands in the soil, their bodies moving, and their hearts full as they explored everything from growing food to making healthier choices.

This wasn’t just a “program” — it was an experience that brought learning to life in the best way possible. Each week, for two powerful hours, these little lights had the opportunity to dive into new ideas, new skills, and new ways to connect with their commUNITY.

We were proud to serve 40 little lights from Pleasants Lane Elementary School (K-5), all of whom were also participating in the YMCA After School Program. By combining these two opportunities, we created an enriching experience that complemented their after-school routine with meaningful, hands-on learning.

What Went Down at Mini Hands 4 Light Work?

Our little lights took part in four incredible experiences designed to inspire curiosity, confidence, and connection:

🌱 “Food 4 Thought” with Farmer Larry

Farmer Larry brought the magic of storytelling, blending powerful books with lessons on food, nature, and community. From stories like “The Curious Garden” to “We Are Water Protectors”, the little lights didn’t just read — they talked, they reflected, and they dreamed big.

🌾 Introduction to Urban Agriculture with The P.L.U.G.

This was where the magic happened — hands in the soil, seeds in the ground, and smiles all around. The little lights learned the fundamentals of soil science, understanding what makes soil healthy and how it impacts plant growth. They also discovered how to prepare garden beds for the growing season, learning techniques to ensure the soil was ready to nurture new plants.

Perhaps most importantly, the little lights explored mindfulness by learning to sow seeds with intention — planting not just for food, but with purpose and care. This intentional planting practice was paired with powerful breathing exercises led by The P.L.U.G., helping the little lights center themselves, calm their minds, and connect with the earth before planting.

These mindful moments grounded the experience, reminding the little lights that growth — both in the garden and in life — starts from within.

🥗 Nutrition Education & Free Meal with 1821 Academy

Healthy eating isn’t boring — and thanks to 1821 Academy, our little lights discovered fun, creative ways to prepare and enjoy local produce. Some of their favorite new dishes included:

Sweet Potato Cornbread — a delicious twist on a classic that introduced the little lights to the versatility of sweet potatoes.

Vegan Fried Rice — a colorful, veggie-packed dish that had the little lights excited about eating their greens.

Lasagna Soup — a warm, hearty, and plant-based comfort meal that showed them that familiar favorites can be both healthy and exciting.

Each session ended with a freshly prepared, nutritious meal that energized them to keep learning and growing.

🏃🏾‍♂️ Kinesiology/Physical Activity with G28

What’s learning without movement? G28 kept the energy high with fun games, teamwork challenges, and activities that had the little lights laughing, sweating, and feeling strong.

Our CommUNITY Farmers Showed Up Big!

We couldn’t have done this without some incredible commUNITY partners who showed our little lights what it means to care for the land and each other:

🌾 Howlett Farm Fiberworks wowed the little lights with lessons on sustainable fiber farming and eco-friendly practices.

🌿 Petersburg Oasis CommUNITY Farm gave our little lights a hands-on look at urban agriculture and why growing food close to home matters for a healthy, thriving community.

These partnerships gave our little lights the chance to connect with local leaders who are working hard to keep Petersburg growing strong — and they saw firsthand that they can be part of that change.

The Impact Was Real — And We’re Just Getting Started

The Mini Hands 4 Light Work pilot was more than just a cool way to spend an afternoon — it was a powerful reminder that our little lights are ready to lead, learn, and leave their mark when given the opportunity. They left inspired, empowered, and eager to do more.

Now, we’re looking ahead.

Our goal is to expand Mini Hands 4 Light Work to the learning garden at Walnut Hill Elementary School and, eventually, to every elementary school in Petersburg. We believe every child should have the opportUNITY to connect with the earth, learn practical skills, and experience the joy of growing food while building strong ties to their commUNITY.

We know big things can happen when we give little hands the tools to thrive — and we’re committed to making that vision a reality.

To our partners, families, and especially the incredible little lights from Pleasant Lane Elementary and the YMCA After School Program who made this pilot unforgettable — thank you.

Together we grow.
