At Petersburg Is Growing Inc., we’re investing in the future by emPOWERing young adults to lead with purpose, connect with their roots, and build a stronger commUNITY. The Young Pharaohs of Petersburg Experience is a year-long journey of leadership, culture, and impact, culminating in an unforgettable trip to Kemet (modern-day Egypt).
In January 2025, we selected seven Young Pharaohs, and their journey officially begins on March 21, 2025. They’ve already started a six-month Apiculture (beekeeping) course with Hollee Freeman, gaining insight into sustainability and environmental stewardship.
With support from an initial $50,000 grant from the New Standard Fund housed at Kindle Project and a grant from the Weissberg Foundation, the Young Pharaohs experience will be supported for the next five years, ensuring long-term growth and opportUNITY!
Future Is Now Flow Fund
A key part of the experience is the Future Is Now Flow Fund, which the Young Pharaohs will manage to invest in commUNITY-led initiatives that promote leadership, sustainability, and social impact—not just in Petersburg, but across Virginia.
The Kindle Project will provide hands-on education on philanthropy and flow funding, while leaders from the New Standard Fund will serve as guest speakers and mentors, sharing their knowledge on commUNITY-driven change and leadership.
Building Connections and Opportunities
The Young Pharaohs will gain valuable experience by working with local business leaders through mentorships and potential internships.
We also recognize the potential for a collaboration with the City of Petersburg to design a model for a Citizen’s Academy that could provide teens and young adults with opportunities to learn about local government and civic engagement.
They’ll also explore Petersburg’s deep history through a collaboration with a local archaeologist from the Petersburg National Battlefield, connecting their local heritage to their broader cultural legacy.
